Every Litter Bit Hurts

Everything has an up and a downside to it. Convenience…and a curse!
Well, fast food has arrived in our area. Stop in for a fast bite to eat and a coffee, or even better still, drive through and take out! What convenience!
Now for the curse part. As you travel down any of our rural roads, you can’t help but notice the increase in trash being discarded haphazardly along the way. There has always been the usual beer cans and bottles thrown into the ditches, but now we add paper coffee cups and plastic lids to keep them company. It seems that fast food seems to breed, in some folks, a « get rid of it fast » mentality. I guess those folks that dump their trash along the roadside are not the folks that would read this anyhow. Individually, we can pick up what we see when we are out and about. Perhaps its time for « Adopt a road » programs in our area where the community can take an active part in trying to mitigate the downside of the convenience food industry. Could also be a good school/community project.
In any case, we live in a relatively pristine area of the province. I guess we are going to have to work hard at trying to keep it that way. As our friends to the south say: Every Litter Bit Hurts.
