Community Project Aims to Reduce Food Waste

It’s not every day that a public invitation to a launch proposes a concrete solution to a massive problem like food waste. But this is exactly what the committee, the employees and the partners behind Récupérer, Conditionner, Transformer pour mieux manger have cooked up by inviting you to attend a press conference on April 9, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. at Coop Racines, 2 Dalhousie Street in Huntingdon.

A collaborative project

This project employs a multi-strategic approach to reduce food waste and to make better use of food surplus by processing and packaging more than 10,000 kg of fruit and vegetables per year that would otherwise have wound up in the garbage. This food solidarity project connects local actors (community organizations, elected officials, schools, producers, etc.) in a collaborative spirit. Packaged products will be distributed through food aid organizations, collective kitchens and participating schools. This project raises our collective awareness of the problem of food insecurity. It has already brought actors from different spheres together to achieve a common goal. In concrete terms, the project aims to reduce food waste, reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills, and increase the quality of available food that incorporates fruit and vegetables. In addition to facilitating the physical and economic accessibility of fresh food to vulnerable populations, this project seeks to raise awareness and change eating habits for the benefit of the population, leading to significant health gains.
